Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Seems like everyone I talk with lately have so much going on in their lives. Their schedules are beyond full of commitments to work, family, and fun. YES, I even encountered those exaggerated emotions of frustration, anger, tiredness, depression, forgetfulness, misunderstandings, and more. Why do we do this to ourselves? You find if you take a break and re-aligned your priorities, that you will get everything done that needs your attention. If not, it will always be there for you later, and you always have tomorrow.

What can you do to help yourself? In your schedule, block some time for yourself to ground yourself so that you are more productive and happy by:

Taking a break to eat, drink water, breathe, stretch, etc.

Exercising outdoors.

Walking barefoot on the beach, in your backyard, at a park.

Avoiding your television, radio, iPod, computer, phone for a period of time.

Listening to silence, nature, the waves, etc.

Meditating on a positive word or affirmation.

Reading your favorite book.

Sleeping.

Eating a homemade, healthy meal.

Spending time with your favorite people. Spend time with your pets!

Immersing yourself in your favorite activities.

And, of course, get a massage-bodywork session with me!

By slowing down and taking time for yourself, you’ll find that you will have more time to get things done!

Resources of the Month

If you can’t take a walk barefooted in your backyard, at the beach, etc., consider Earthed Technologies for your bed or for travel. Since using the sheet on my bed, I am more focused in my activities (including sleeping!), less hungry, and more productive. I have 2 friends who feel that their lives have changed dramatically, because they feel more rested, have bundles of energy, and even starting to build muscle mass but their workouts haven’t changed!

Great and interesting stuff! I have a sleeping pad on my bed, and I used it in my studio as a part of my massage practice. I hope you can feel as great as I do!

Me! If you are still feeling those exaggerated emotions you don’t like having, come see me for a massage-bodywork session so you can relax and give some time back to yourself! I can help you feel better and provide ideas to keep you motivated and feeling well!

For All Military

salute-to-us-flag_fullTo all the people who have been sending me comments about My Community Project, thank you! Keep exploring all the natural, healing possibilities “out there” and tell your military healthcare provider! In the future, we will have holistic, healing therapies/services as integral part of the military healthcare system. In the meantime, here are these alternatives:

Acupuncture and chiropractic services are now provided at the San Diego military healthcare facilities. Also, you can ask your military healthcare provider about seeing an acupuncturist/a chiropractor “outside” of the military healthcare system. Work within their guidelines/procedures in order to receive these services in the local community.

Currently, the military healthcare system does not recognized massage-bodywork services as a healing therapy. Share with your military healthcare providers the benefits you received from massage-bodywork therapies, and hopefully, eventually, massage-bodywork therapies will be incorporated into the military healthcare system like acupuncture and chiropractic services.

I have reasonable session rates for active duty, retired, veteran, and government personnel.

HEALTH-MASSAGE-BODYWORK TIPS

Spring is in the air! This is the perfect time to spring clean your life! Take a look at your life and make a new plan. What do you want to clean out as the past in your environment and within yourself? At home and at work, go through your physical belongings. Things that you don’t use anymore (or never used after they were bought), items that bring up “bad” memories of the past, clothes that don’t fit but keep because we are going to wear them again “some day”, etc., donate or give/throw them away! Clean and fix the items we use all the time. Have gratitude for the things that you do have and share it with family and friends! While you are spring cleaning your home/work environments, you may become emotional. This is ok and normal. Getting rid of objects kept “forever” could potentially cleanse your body, mind, and spirit in ways you can’t imagine from creating new supporting relationships, losing weight, and to doing things you always wanted to do!

Also, this is an ideal time to create new health and life plans. Include goals of how you wish to feel and what you would like to do. Think about what would make you joyful and include them in your plans. When you take care of yourself first, you will be able to do everything else that you wish for. Think about including diet, exercise, spending time alone, spending time with people you love, and therapeutic goals. Sometimes when are in a rut or want to keep things “flowing” in your life, holistic therapies (like the massage-bodywork therapies I offer) can help keep the energies in your body energized.

The spring season represents new beginnings. Plant your seeds now and what them grow and flourish!

HEALTH-MASSAGE-BODYWORK TIPS

Don’t fret! It is normal to feel “other than normal” or “elevated” emotions during and/or after a massage/bodywork session, which you wouldn’t normally experience in your daily routine. Repressed emotions or unpleasant experiences can get trapped in body tissues that lead to pain, ailments, and disease. Massage/bodywork therapies help release these stored emotions, free the mind of negative thoughts, and restore the body back to health.

If you feel angry or sad during and/or after your massage/bodywork session, don’t ignore it but acknowledge the emotions instead. Really feel it and ask yourself why you feel the way you do. The answer may come to you immediately through past experiences and memories. Other times these emotions surface and you’ll have no clue why. Again acknowledge it. By recognizing these new feelings can help you release muscle tension, old beliefs, past negative experiences, and even disease.

Here’s an informative article that summarizes the connection between body-mind, how massage-bodywork can release emotions, defines an emotional release, and how massage/bodywork is a great complement to the “talk therapy” communities.

Maybe now you are asking, “Well, I always feel great, joyous, happy, elated after my sessions!” This is good too! Go with it! Maybe in the future this could happen for everyone experiencing massage/bodywork sessions!

After all massage/bodywork sessions, ensure you make time to take care of yourself with lots of water, nutritious food, and rest. Journaling, listening to music, sitting quietly, and whatever else you enjoy to relax are all excellent recommendations to heal yourself.

February 2009 – Health Tips E-Newsletter

HEALTH TIPS

Lately, I have been sharing with my clients massage-bodywork techniques you can do at home to help reduce pain, stay in alignment, etc. These are economical remedies to help alleviate pain in your neck, back, IT bands, gluts, your feet, and where ever else you hurt. The “equipment” I suggest you probably already have stashed in your home somewhere, but if you do not, you can go to a 2nd hand sports store, a softball/baseball field, a tennis court, or golf course…

So if you have a softball, tennis ball, and/or golf ball, you are in business to do your own massage-bodywork!

Start with a tennis ball and roll it:

On the bottom of your feet while standing or sitting – great for plantar fasciitis.

On your temples – great for headaches.

On both sides of your spine – must have 2 tennis balls. Lie on the bed or floor (is better) and put 2 balls at the base of your neck (great for headaches) or on sides of your spine (great for back pain) and just lie there. You can also move the balls down your spine or do compressions down your spine.

For those who graduated from using tennis balls, use a golf ball instead.

With a softball, put it in a long sock and roll it:

Anywhere you have pain…great for your back, IT bands, gluteal (butt) muscles, calves, etc. For the back, stand with your back facing the wall. With the softball in a sock, put it between the wall and your back, and start finding areas that hurt. Once you do, hold it for up to 10 seconds. If the pain does not go away, find another spot to address, and then revisit the initial spot of pain later to see if it has lessened or gone away. If the pain is very intense or the pain does not go away, make sure you lighten up on your pressure.

You will need to be creative on how to use these balls as massage tools for your muscles, but they do great work.

Also, always make sure you are drinking enough water, eating well, getting plenty of rest, and exercising daily. These actions will keep the pain away, too.

Lastly, I have used softballs to give-away – given to me from 2 of my clients on a local women’s softball team.

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

Some other cool “tools” to have are a foam roller and/or the trigger point pro. These tools are similar in usage to the balls discussed above:

Foam rollers: Visit “http://www.nefitco.com/foam_rollers.html?source=”. (Copy/paste link between quotes into your browser). I recommend getting a 3ft roller.

The trigger point pro: Visit http://www.massagewarehouse.com/itemdetail~item~230+0050.asp.

As always, do your research for better prices and what works for you.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“You have the choice every moment of the day to be either self-constructive or self-destructive.” –Douglas Graham

BODY, MIND, SPIRIT TIP

The weather has been spectacular (well from my perspective!) which makes it simple to get rolling on all your New Year’s intentions, right? Well, maybe not so. Winter, even in San Diego, is the season of replenishment, resting, reflecting, and being more aware of your emotions and senses. But it is also ideal to keep active in order to keep your body warm and your energy moving. Then by spring, you will be ready to get start new projects and begin/continue working on your intention list for the year!

Ideas that you are already familiar with to keep you happy and healthy are eating fresh foods, maintaining a positive outlook, sleeping and exercising regularly along with receiving massage-bodywork sessions help lessen/ease your stress in your life and improve your well-being. Now that the holidays are long gone, you may feel tired, heavier, and more emotional. Here are other ideas I have been sharing lately with people to feel lighter in body, mind, and spirit:

Drink HOT water! It’s cold these days, but you still need water, so try drinking it hot! Most of the time, I’ll mix ½ boiling water with ½ room temperature water. You can still add lemon juice, cayenne pepper, or flavors that you prefer. You might even crave this drink after awhile, even during the summer. Really!

Making and drinking one “green drink” daily. I usually have my green drinks in the morning. Today, I used 2 leafs of kale, a handful of cilantro, a carrot, a grapefruit, ~2 cups of hot water, and blend in a blender. YUM! See “Resource of the Month” for Victoria’s book – with recipes, too.

If you are still feeling hungry from the holidays, maybe consider a colon cleansing and/or body detox programs. There are so many “out there” that you’ll have to do some research online or at your local health food store. I used http://www.drnatura.com/. It was very easy to do, and I did NOT have to change my regular meal routine. These programs will help cleanse your taste buds so foods/drinks will taste better, help you loose weight, and allow your system to flow more effectively.

If you are really focused about cleansing your body, consider taking wheatgrass, a couple times daily, during your cleanse.

If you are not going to use a cleansing program, consider taking acidophilus to normalizing the flora in your digestive track, so that you can digest your food and absorb nutrients better.

Exercise, at least, once a day – outside or indoors! I know it’s challenging during the winter. I generally don’t like going to gyms (duh, I live in San Diego!), but started again after the New Year and I LIKE IT! I’m taking classes, so I don’t have to create my own workouts all the time. The instructor can do that for you while you workout to burn calories, gain muscle, lose weight!

There are so many other suggestions I could list, but start with something easy first, see if you like it, and make it a habit. Then try another suggestion or idea that you been thinking about. The goal is to have fun! Enjoy!

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“Living in a way that is outwardly simple and inwardly rich.” –Duane Elgin

BODY, MIND, SPIRIT TIP

The holidays always seem “crazy” with too many things to do, parties to attend, and more! This time you wonder if you are going to make it through this week, much less Christmas and New Year’s. Just remember to keep yourself your #1 priority and everything else will fall into place. You have the capacity to shift gears and slow down and breathe. You can set boundaries and designate time for self and relaxation. Schedule your day and all it activities so that don’t over-schedule yourself and at the end of the day you can be proud of what you accomplished. Find ways to re-energize yourself throughout the day while working, shopping, doing a tedious task, etc. like taking a break that from what you are doing, think about how much you have in your life to be grateful for, go for walk, meditate, etc. You can also engage in some new creative expression to rebalance your life – like a new hobby, a new book to read, anything that will stimulate mentally and physically. Just be easy about yourself. The winter and the holidays are for slowing down and savoring the many blessings you have in your life, so that you can be re-energized for new beginnings in the spring!

INFORMATION ABOUT MY PRACTICE

Have you ever thought about creating your own preventive healthcare plan for yourself BEFORE you actually get sick? What would you include in your healthcare plan? Here are some ideas: Are you drinking enough water (ideally ½ your body weight in ounces) daily? Are you getting enough nutrition from the foods you eat throughout the day? Are you exercising daily? Are you getting enough play time to balance your work schedule? Are you resting enough?

If you are not healthy now, how can you fully participate in your own life? Adding holistic, therapeutic alternatives are ideas to include when creating or changing your own healthcare plan. An option to consider in your healthcare plan is receiving routine massage-bodywork therapy sessions.

My practice primarily focuses on stretching contracted connective tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.) and deactivating trigger points, which allows your body to release pain and to find its natural alignment so that you can move without feeling pain. QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“If you can sleep, you need the sleep.” –Douglas Graham

BODY, MIND, SPIRIT TIP

Feeling exhausted right now? Did you get hit with a cold or the flu lately? The best cure is rest (rest means “doing nothing”!) and sleep! Rest and sleep are definitely some of the best things you can do for your health, other than drinking lots of water, of course! Having sufficient sleep benefits alertness, memory and problem solving; improves immunity and overall health; and reduces the risk of accidents. The lack of proper rest provides deficits in concentration, motivation, perception, and developing obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other diseases. This is easily reversible with just getting more sleep into your life routine.

Many people say they just don’t have time to sleep!? Crazy, but getting enough sleep will greatly improve productivity and health. If you have difficulties resting and sleeping, consider trying very gentle, relaxing yoga, a warm bath, listening to peaceful music, watch (fun) movies, read (your favorite) books and magazines, play with your pets, and/or turning off the TV and computer. Also, incorporating meditation and/or prayer as a part of your “rest routine” could greatly improve your well-being and your need for more sleep.

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

There are tons of information on the internet about sleep and rest. Google “sleeping” and “sleep and rest” and read until you feel sleepy or find what relates to you. Libraries and local book stores can help you with your research, too.

When I was 10 years old, my parents took me to a Transcendental Meditation (TM) center to learn how to meditate. It made a difference in my life, even today. You can Google “meditation” and there will be plenty of reading material to get you started in creating your own meditation program as a part of your healthcare plan.

INFORMATION ABOUT MY PRACTICE

Do you feel pain in a specific area that just won’t go away? Or do you feel pain all over and can’t figure the specific cause of your pain? Or are you considering drug therapy or surgery to get rid of pain? Feel like you need a really good STRETCH?! If you said “yes” to any of these questions, please, consider massage-bodywork therapies as a part of your healthcare plan. My practice primarily focuses on stretching contracted connective tissue (muscles, tendons, ligaments, etc.) and deactivating trigger points, which allows your body to release pain and to find its natural alignment so that you can move without feeling pain. I specialize in several modalities from gentle to intense. My website is very informative, so please visit to learn more about my services and massage-bodywork benefits and tips for before, during, and after your sessions.

I have a new website address that way easier to remember. It is http://www.MicheleRuppert.com/, so please make a note of it.

I am available to speak to your company or organization about general health and the benefits of massage-bodywork therapy. If your company is interested in establishing or maintaining a wellness department to provide pain and stress prevention to its employees for improved work performance, please, contact me.

As of last month, I have “taken a vacation” from working on my community project with the San Diego Veterans Administration (VA) to incorporate advanced therapeutic/medicinal massage-bodywork therapies as a holistic approach to pain and stress prevention in the government healthcare system for all military personnel and their dependents. See my website for the latest updates under “My Actions Taken” section. Now I am thinking about other possibilities to incorporate this idea into civilian and/or military healthcare systems.

Some of you haven’t used your gift certificates! Call to set up your appointment soon! Also, I have gift certificates available for any of the upcoming holidays and family and social events!  And, my practice depends on your referrals, so if you provide any referrals, I will give you a $10 discount off your next session.

If you have any questions about my services and would like to set up an appointment, please, contact me! I look forward to working with you at your next appointment!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“You are the creator of your experience.” –Abraham-Hicks

BODY, MIND, SPIRIT TIP

Does it feel like every time your turn-on the television, read the paper, or listen to the radio, it is practically all negative words, sounds, and situations? We all are being affected by these challenging times today. However, here are some ways to make your day more positive:

  1. Put a limit to reading and listening to bad news, i.e. designate a day for not watching TV or reading the paper. If you are worried about something that’s going on, conduct your own research, create your own solutions, and act on them. You’ll feel much better.
  2. Limit your interactions with people who feed on drama, negativity, and fear. Surround yourself with people who are optimistic, want to solve problems, and are hopeful. There are times you need to listen to people and their concerns. Make sure that these conversations are constructive.
  3. Fill your head and heart with empowering information and inspiration. Do things that make you happy. Read things that inspire you.
  4. Empower others do to well which will inspire you to do well in any challenge that they and you are facing.
  5. Use the power of your own thought. Think and imagine positive things happening and positive things will happen, if you don’t doubt it.

If you are in chronic pain and are thinking about taking drugs (or want to lessen/rid of your pain mediation intake) or getting shots or surgery (like back, knee, carpel tunnel, and other tissue related surgeries) to escape your pain and to feel better, YOU MUST ATTEND! QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“The world can only change from within.” –Eckhart Tolle

BODY, MIND, SPIRIT TIP

Over the summer, I read this thought-provoking book by Eckhart Tolle, A New Earth…Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose. A powerful read if you are ready to embark on a journey to transform your life. This book focuses on you and how you can bring about a shift in consciousness in everything you do! Either you are going to really like this book or not. I say give it a chance, read it, listen to it (see below), do the exercises, and feel your life change for the best!

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

To complement the New Earth reading, listen to the New Earth Webcast with both Eckhart and Oprah. The audios for each chapter are about 1 hour long with chapter 10 being 2 hours long. A great listen when you finished reading a chapter so that you can really get what you read. I listen to these audios during my walks and hikes through parks, at the beach…

August 2008 – Health Tips E-Newsletter

INFORMATION ABOUT MY PRACTICE

My practice includes traditional Thai massage, Structural Integration, the Rossiter System, and Neuromuscular Therapy. My services will STRETCH your body like it has never been stretched before to release (the source) pain so that when your session is completed you will feel rejuvenated, more upright, and more in your natural expanded posture (and potentially look thinner!). So don’t be shy, give one (or more) of my sessions a try!

My website is very informative, so please visit them to learn more about my services, massage benefits and tips, my schedule and calendar, and more! Also, read about my community project on my website to introduce the idea of incorporating therapeutic/medicinal massage-bodywork therapy services as another holistic approach to pain and stress prevention in the government healthcare system for all military personnel and their dependents. I can use your help by spreading the word and supporting my project.

I am giving free evening talks/demos from July through September. This month’s talk/demo is about Traditional Thai Massage on Tuesday evening, August 12th, at People’s Co-Op starting at 6:15 PM. If you never experienced a traditional Thai massage, it is like having yoga done to you! Thai massages are a combination of acupressure, energy meridian work, and lots of stretching. A Thai massage is very gentle and stimulates your body’s nature healing process along with helping your body release pain and stresses stored within your tissues. After your session, you will feel like Gumby!

Don’t forget to use those gift certificates you bought or won! Who says you don’t have time to take care of yourself? So yes, I do have gift certificates, and they are perfect for any and every occasion that Hallmark and you create!

If you have any questions about my services, please, call me! I look forward to working with you at your next appointment – soon!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

“The bottom line is that sugar upsets the body chemistry and suppresses the immune system. Once the immune system becomes suppressed, the door is open to infectious and degenerative diseases. The stronger the immune system the easier it is for the body to fight infectious and degenerative diseases. – Nancy Appleton

BODY, MIND, SPIRIT TIP

Hey, Sugar! How much do you really know about sugar? Having a diet with lots of unnatural, processed, and refined sugars is a contributor to disease. These sugars keep your body acidic which creates the feeding ground for pathologies to develop in your body. It is ideal to have a diet that is more alkaline, which means your diet should include mostly of vegetables and fruits … from the produce department and preferably organic. The Macrobiotics website has a page discussing the affects of sugar on the body and mind. Also, another video to watch is Sweet Misery (about artificial sweeteners). Hopefully, after reading and listening to these resources, you will consider changing your diet to healthier alternatives…

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH

There are so many books and websites to read about sugar, but here are some starter books: Not only does Nancy Appleton have some interesting books to read about sugar (see the quote above), but another EXCELLENT book about sugar is Sugar Blues by William Duffy.
