Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

It’s that time of the quarter again – Body Sense Autumn 2011 Edition!   Body Sense is a publication written for people who frequently receive massage-bodywork sessions or for those who are interesting in doing so in the future.

I personally enjoy Body Sense, because the articles are short and informative. Instead of “hearing it” from me, you can benefit from other holistic health writers and clients, and how they are integrating holistic health and massage-bodywork into their healthy lifestyle.

Here’s a listing of main articles in this issue of Body Sense:

Massage, What’s in It for You
15 Things Your MT Wants You to Know (Good Info – Hint!)
Many Faces of Botox
Massage in the Classroom
And more…

I hope you take pleasure in reading Body Sense as much as I do!

For San Diego residents, listed below are complementary practitioners:

yogaFor those who are interested in Pilates, I recommend Cheryl Greaves of Pilates in South Park.  Like me, she’s passionate about health and finding (and keeping) your organic optimum posture.  Guaranteed to see and feel the differences within a few sessions but recommend a steady practice.  An awesome workout, too!

For those who are interested in yoga and restorative yoga, I recommend Marguerite Baca of Yoga Nectar.  She blends in a body, mind, and spirit flow integrated with health research factoids into her classes.  Her yoga and restorative yoga classes focus on deep relaxation, strengthening the physical body, and much more.

** Both Pilates and Yoga are beneficial to all individuals! **

September 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

There are many “therapies” you hear about that can heal anything and everything through TV and radio infomercials, referrals from family-friends-colleagues and your doctor, research on the internet, reading articles and book references, and more.  Many of these “cure-alls” are from people who want to share how they healed themselves and want to pass it on.  Hence the stories are similar (in lots of pain or very sick and if you do/buy “this”, a miracle will happen and you’ll feel great!).  Hence why there are so many specialists and modalities showing similar results, but using different systems.  Does it mean it will help you?  Maybe or maybe not.

How do you decide what works for you, if these therapies are beneficial?  My answer: YOUR personal experience.  YOU have to take the time and energy (and $$$) to figure out what works for YOU.  YOU have plenty to choose from “out there” – an advantage of being an American Citizen – YOU have plenty of choices!  Ultimately, YOU know what feels good to YOU – not your doctor and not anyone else.

In the realm of body therapies, below are some ideas for “natural therapies” (aka alternative therapy) that can help you get your body, your muscles back into balance.  This is NOT an inclusive list but some ideas to consider in getting-staying healthy:

a)    If you prefer receiving massage-bodywork sessions, then visit practitioners (like me!) who specialize in specific massage-bodywork modalities that apply to your condition.  There are way too many modalities to list/discuss here, but a good place to start would be an online practitioner directory like ABMP.

b)    If you like working with a trainer/coach, consider the Egoscue Method, active release techniques, muscle activation techniques, a physical therapist, etc.

c)    If you like to work with a movement specialist, consider Feldenkrais and/or Alexander Technique.

d)    If you like group exercise, consider yoga, karate, Pilates, kettle bells, Nia, Zumba, foam roller classes, etc.

People are in discomfort for many reasons: lack of water, improper nutrition, not enough rest, not moving properly, emotional/psychological/mental/physical distress, childhood injuries, muscles out of balance in the muscular/skeleton systems from physical trauma, and more.  Big muscles are always stronger than little muscles.  Strengthening muscles don’t usually help with the release of pain.  Getting the body’s connective tissue in balanced and expanded along with hydration, rest, proper movement, daily exercise, resolving personal emotional and mental distress, etc. are natural things people can do to contribute to their health and well being.

Now it’s up to YOU – the above list provides you ideas to explore.  Have fun and I look forward to hearing about your new experiences!

August 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

In most all of my sessions, I share information about tools people can use “on their own” as they continue to feel better.  I personally use these tools, too.  These “equipment” ideas help in reducing and keeping pain away, help with keeping your natural alignment, and more.  It’s like receiving free massage-bodywork therapy at home, but you are doing the work…so pay yourself a session fee when you’re done J

These ideas are economical remedies to help alleviate pain in your neck, back, IT bands, gluteal (butt) muscles, your feet, and where ever else you hurt.  The “equipment” I suggest you probably already have stashed in your home somewhere, but if you don’t, you can go to a 2nd hand sports store, a softball/baseball field, a tennis court, golf course…and yes, the internet, too.

These tools will not only stretch muscles and tendons, but they also break down soft tissue and scar tissue.  By using your own body weight with these tools, you perform a self-massage (also called a myofascial or connective tissue release), break-up trigger points, and soothe tight fasica while increasing blood flow and circulation (of nutrients and wastes) to/from the soft tissue being addressed.

So if you have a softball, tennis ball, and/or golf ball, you are in business to do your own massage-bodywork!  Here are some new possibilities of how to use these tools you already have along with the introduction of new tools:

1) Find a tennis ball(s) and roll on it:

a. On the bottom of your feet while standing or sitting with all your body weight – great for plantar fasciitis.

b. On your temples – great for headaches, in a side-lying position.

c. On both sides of your spine – must have 2 tennis balls inside a sock (tie a knot at the end of the sock). Lie on the bed or floor (is better) and put 2 balls at the base of your neck (great for headaches) or on outside of your spine (great for back pain) and just lie there. You can also move the balls down your spine (by moving on top of the balls) or do compressions down your spine.

* If tennis balls aren’t working for you, try golf balls instead.

2) Try a softball and put it in a long sock and roll on it:

Specific areas you have pain…great for your back, IT bands, gluteal muscles, calves, etc. For the back, stand with your back facing the wall. With the softball in a sock (knot at the end), put it between the wall and your back, lean in, start finding areas that hurt. Once you do, hold it for up to 10 seconds. If the pain does not go away, find another spot to address, and then revisit the initial spot of pain later to see if it has lessened or gone away. If the pain is very intense or the pain does not go away, make sure you lighten up some on your pressure and try again.

3) Buy a foam roller and roll on it (my favorite!):

Another tool for any areas you have pain, like your back, IT bands, gluteal muscles, calves, etc.  When I have lower back pain, I used a foam roller on my upper legs (quads and IT Bands) to release my back – works like a charm.  The “secret” to using foam rollers is that you MUST surrender to the roller.  Rolling slowly is best.  You have to imagine your bones being massaged by the roller.  If you not experienced this before, most likely it’s going to be intense, feels like deep bruising, but it will ease-up with more rolling over time – AND you will feel great with more freedom.  Try it and find out!  More info in the Resources section below.

4) Massage pillow:

Personally, I use this massage pillow to massage my temples and jaws.  This tool is definitely ideal for people diagnosed with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder.  This pillow can be used for neck, shoulders, and lower back as well.  For anyone who lives near a Bed, Bath, and Beyond, you can even use your 20% off coupon that you get in the mail!

You will need to be creative and sometimes coordinated when using this equipment on your own as massage tools for your muscles, but they do work.  With practice, I would imagine you will find effective ways to incorporate these tools into your health regime.

Finally, when you are not at your 100%, I recommend just going back to basics:  drink 1-2+ glasses more of water; substitute fruits and vegetables for the sugar, fat, and salt that is traditionally in the Standard American Diet; get out outside for exercise, fresh air, and/or sunshine; and go to bed earlier than normal (or sleep in) at least one day a week.

Lastly, when you stray from the path, which we all do, take one small step to start back on the road to feeling better and then another, etc.  No judgment, only compassion for being human.

2) I’ve not used a rumble roller, but heard people are receiving great results.

June 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

This month I went to Big Bear with my hiking friends.  We hiked 24 miles of the Pacific Coast Trail.  After the two big hikes, Diane and I, since June is our birthday month, took the plunge in Big Bear Lake.  Burr.  Ah, ski resorts in the summer are the best!

Last month, I met Richard Louv.  He had a powerful message, “If you want to heal yourself and the environment around you, then you need to fall back in love with nature.”  It totally makes sense to me!  How much time during the day do you spend attending to all your electronic devices?  Then compare that to the time you spend outside in nature.  What do you notice?

Run an experiment:  Spend dedicated time with your TV, phone, computer, etc. and then at the end of the day check-in with how you feel physically and emotionally.  On the next day take a electronics day-off and spend it in nature, playing your favorite sport, etc. and see how you feel by the end of the day.  I would venture to say that the “no electronics day” is going to be way more fun and insightful.

Spending time outdoors and with physical activity helps quiet the mind.  A quiet mind is free of negative thoughts and emotions.  Without these stressful distractions, you allow yourself to listen to your innate wisdom and you make decisions that are solid and supportive.

Summertime is a wonderful time to “fall back in love with nature” where ever you are!

May 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Summer is almost here!  If you haven’t already, it’s time to get your body in motion.  People have a tendency of not moving around, especially when some part(s) of their body hurts, when they feel depressed, etc.

Although, some doctors are moving towards “alternative” medicine, “Doctors’ New Advice for Joint Pain: Get Moving”.  A step in a healthy direction.  However, there is much more YOU can do in creating and maintaining a healthy lifestyle rather than the current medical paradigm of prescribed/OTC medications, surgeries, extra devices (shoe inserts, canes, etc.), etc.

Here are some natural tips for your journey to optimal health and to weight loss, less injuries, positive thinking, etc.  Of course, most of these are not mentioned in the article…

1) Get hydrated.  Drink minimally ½ your body weight in ounces of water daily for the rest of your life.  So many benefits to drinking water – see the Reference section below.

2) Greatly minimize (possibly stop consuming) CRAP (candy/sugar, refined foods, alcohol, processed foods).  Eat a nutritious diet of natural foods (fruits, vegetables, nuts/seeds).  Supplement if you have to, but do your research.

3) Exercise daily and stretch your body especially the areas that feel tight.  Remember walking is the easiest and best exercise for the human body.

4) Get outside daily.  Get some sunlight on your skin and breathing deeply.  It all just feels good!

5) Get adequate rest.  Sleep recharges the body for the next day’s activities.

6) Resolve your personal, emotional issues.  Work with a counselor, support groups, etc.  When these issues get resolved, you will feel better and body pain may just go away…

7) Work with a massage-bodywork practitioner who specializes in connective tissue (like me).  You can complement massage-bodywork sessions with a movement practitioner, too, for maximum benefits (like yoga, Egoscue, Pilates, Tai Chi, karate, Feldenkrais, etc.).

This may sound somewhat “woo-woo” to you, but give it a try, you might experience some surprising results.

Even Dr. Oz has similar tips:  1) Walk 2) Real food, and 3) Passion.

News From Gerson Institute

Hi Everyone,

Nope, this isn’t my monthly e-newsletter, but this e-bulletin is just too good not to forward.  It’s full of great movies (in Netflix and at libraries) and book recommendations.  I heard the Gerson courses are GREAT!  I’m on the waiting list for the Basics Workshop to learn more about their protocol.  One my hiking friends recently completed this Gerson program.  She previously had rheumatoid arthritis.  On May 1st, 2011, she says through email to me, “I am celebrating Day One Hundred and Three without meds or pain”.  Yet another miracle from these NATURAL programs that you would never hear about from your mainstream doctor.

Programs like Gerson Therapy and the Optimum Health Institute (OHI) (http://www.optimumhealth.org/) are WORLD-KNOWN for their miracles and, lucky for me, are both located in San Diego.  I completed OHI’s 3 week program in January 2006 and witnessed many miracles.  One was a man in his 70s who came in a wheelchair, couldn’t speak nor move primarily because of the medications his doctor was giving him for a multitude of ailments.  After completing this program (took longer than my 3 weeks) and no longer on medications, he was riding his bike every morning to be at OHI.  Ha, I wonder what his doctor thought about his recovery?!

This e-bulletin is full of informative viewing and reading materials for healthy living through diet and our relationship to the food industry.  I personally believe there is a cure for cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases in these programs complimented with being hydrated with water (http://www.watercure.com/), exercising, receiving sunlight, sleeping well, thinking positive thoughts, resolving personal issues in healthy ways, etc.

I hope you find this information below as insightful as I did.

Warmly,
M-

The Gerson Institute E-bulletin

May 2011

Dear Michele,

It’s hard to believe it’s May already – and the end of another (fiscal) year here at the Gerson Institute. On behalf of the Executive Board and all the staff here at the Gerson Institute, I want to say thank you for your support during this exciting year of growth and transition.

Over the last year we have:

  • Increased the number of people receiving this educational eBulletin from 18,000 in May of 2010 to over 32,000 today!
  • Started a program to give increased support and continuing education to our dedicated team of Certified Gerson Caregivers.
  • Email requests from people around the globe seeking information on the Gerson Therapy have more than doubled.

These are just a few of our accomplishments this year. We can do all these things because of the generosity of our supporters. So whether you bought a book, attended a workshop or made a donation – thank you very much!

But we have much more planned for this coming year. So if you haven’t made a donation yet  (or would like to make another one) please help us continue our work and keep spreading Dr. Gerson’s legacy of hope and healing.

       Sincerely,
Mika

Updates on Steve Kroschel’s Documentaries

As of April 21st, Steve Kroschel’s documentaries about the Gerson Therapy, The Beautiful Truth, Dying to Have Known and The Gerson Miracle, are no longer available to watch instantly on Netflix. No worries though! You can stream The Gerson Miracle on Hulu.com or for a $5 donation through our online store, and you can still rent the discs through Netflix. Food Matters, another excellent documentary about nutritional healing featuring interviews with Charlotte Gerson, is still available to watch instantly on Netflix. Keep passing these great documentaries on to your family and friends to spread the word about natural healing. Each one teach one!

The good news is that Steve Kroschel is currently wrapping up work on a brand new documentary, under the working title Alive Tomorrow! Alive Tomorrow takes note of the increasing assaults on our health by our government, Big Pharma, Monsanto and other industries, complete with the latest accelerating developments in this apparently concerted effort to make and keep us sick. It will recap many of the patient stories from the previous documentaries, updating the patients’ status to the current date. Steve Kroschel has nearly finished editing the film, and says to expect its release within the next couple of months.

Charlotte Gerson’s New Book!
Charlotte Gerson’s fourth book, Defeating Arthritis, Bone and Joint Diseases, is being readied to go to the printer. We expect it to be available for purchase around mid-summer. Like her last work, Defeating Obesity, Diabetes and High Blood Pressure, it provides a Gerson Therapy solution for a particular set of chronic, otherwise “incurable” diseases. Charlotte delves into the causes, courses and non-toxic remedies for osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis, scleroderma and other conditions with which the Gerson Therapy has had excellent results. In Defeating Arthritis, Bone and Joint Diseases, Charlotte offers no-nonsense, drug-free relief and even recovery from these painful, debilitating and sometimes fatal illnesses.

The Gerson Institute will accept pre-publication orders until July 1, 2011 at $16.95, a discount of $5.00 off the normal retail price of $21.95.|Pre-order Here|

New Book For Sale!
The Gerson Institute is excited to let you know about a new book we’ve added to our store: Thugs, Drugs, and The War On Bugs. This book teaches the difference between the germ theory developed by Louis Pasteur and Pleomorphism suggested by Antoine Bechamp (“the terrain is everything”). It goes into depth about the relationship between the use of antibiotics and yeast infections and the connection between the mercury in vaccines and autism. Deeply researched, deadly serious, yet often humorous and irreverent, it thoroughly explains how we got into this mess and what we can do to be truly healthy. |Purchase Here|

April 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

People been asking me if I drink water.  Yes, I drink lots of water or I wouldn’t recommend it.  Some days I do well (getting in 3 liters (~100 oz)); other days I drink ~30-60 oz.  I can easily say I drink more water than most people on earth, and I feel good about that since I haven’t had a cold in years along with no current health issues.

People ask me what is the best water to drink.  My answer is any water that feels and tastes good when you drink it.  I drink a variety of water from home filtered, distilled, reverse osmosis, and ionized-alkalized water.  I drink a variety of waters just like I eat a variety of foods.  My body likes variety.  However, I do avoid straight tap water (my body doesn’t like it) and the bottled-water industry (way too much plastic waste).  I have my own set of water bottles I use throughout the day.  With Earth Day festivities this month, there will be water bottle sales, so buy some of those “environmental friendly” bottles and drink and refill them as much as possible!

If you are drinking/using tap water, I recommend researching what’s in the water that you are consuming.  Ensure that the water system you are using is eliminating “the goodies” you don’t want to consume.  For example, in February 2011, the City of San Diego began fluoridating all its drinking water.  Personally I think this is frightening, and one of the reasons why I drink other than tap water and now looking for water system alternatives for my home that use water (like my washer/dryer, showers, etc.).

Just like exploring different flavors of beer, wines, and food, explore what water tastes and feels good to you, too!

March 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

It’s that time of the quarter again – the Spring 2011 edition of Body Sense!

How Fascia Helps Your Body Flow – Let Your Fascia Flow
Foods for a Healthy Back
What’s Qi?
Healing Effects of Massage Mind
An Uneasy Client
And more…

I hope you take pleasure in reading Body Sense as much as I do!

February 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Almost 50% of the world’s population are affected by headaches, making it one of the ten most disabling global health complaints.  I’m sure there are more current references, but I believe the percentage of headaches is about the same or potentially higher these days…

There are many steps you can pursue to ensure you don’t get headaches anymore (or at least lessen them).  The Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in San Diego, promotes a headache diary to help you identify/eliminate headache triggers using the acronym SHED Your Headache Triggers, which I modified/improved:

Example Strategies
S
Stress & Tension Stress reduction exercises (breathing, meditation, yoga, guided imagery, biofeedback, physical activity, etc.)
Stimuli (lights, sound, odors) Avoid strong odors, 2nd hand smoke, fluorescent light, staring at electronic devices, etc.  Have light/sound protection on hand, take breaks, etc.
Sleep Dysfunction Schedule/prepare for sleep.  If your sleep is disrupted beyond your control, research/discuss treatment remedies.
H
Hormones Get a blood test for possible areas of excess/deficiency.  Research/discuss treatment remedies.
Habits Become aware/modify habits which maybe triggering headaches (stressful eating, missed meals, poor posture, being dehydrated, smoking, etc.)
E
Exercise Attempt various exercises/settings which allow activity without promoting headaches.
Environmental changes (weather, meal time, etc.) Plan ahead to minimize changes.  Research/discuss treatment remedies.
D
Diet Utilize a diary to help identify/eliminate potential triggers.  Make sure you are drinking water!
Deficiency Get a blood test for possible areas of excess/deficiency.  Research/discuss treatment remedies.
Drugs Research/discuss which of your current medications maybe contributing to your headaches.  Make sure future treatment remedies don’t contribute to headaches.

The easiest remedy (but generally not given by doctors or even headache references online) is drinking water.  When you feel that headache coming-on more than likely you are dehydrated, so start drinking water.  Better yet, ensure you are drinking half your body weight in ounces of water daily for the rest of your life, and I would imagine the number of headaches you get will greatly decrease.

With my experience and education, headaches are many times influenced by “structure” (your posture).  If you are dehydrated and stressed, your body tissue contracts which causes discomfort.  Also, with many people slouched over and constantly staring at their electronic devices, it’s no wonder they are experiencing headaches and jaw, neck, shoulder, and back pain.  Therefore, sit properly (on your sit bones with crown (top) of head to the sky) and then use and look at those electronic devices!

Try not to reach for the pain reliever first, drink water and incorporate another natural pain relieving activity(s) (refer to the above chart or below resources) instead to become headache-free!
