News from Michele

healthypeopleIt’s been an informative and fast-moving year for me!  Here are some of my experiences this year that maybe of interest to you:

I became a member of the Price-Pottenger Nutrition Foundation (PPNF).  It is a non-profit education foundation, headquartered here in San Diego (Lemon Grove), committed to reversing the trend of declining health in our modern world.  I attended a couple of their classes this year and was very impressed by their professional staff, their extensive library, and their well-researched speakers.  If you are looking for more alternatives to prevent or reverse health conditions, PPNF is a great resource.

When I was at PPNF, I took two courses by David Getoff, a naturopath and clinical nutritionist.  Whew, I was blown away with his data-rich, researched-based information about diet, supplements, cleaning products, toiletries, light bulbs, and more.  Seriously!  What he shared with us helped me improve my life even more – now taking dietary supplements, cleaning up my diet (working towards minimal-no sugars, starches, and alcohol), and minimizing all the toxins and stressors in my environment (changing over to non-toxic cleaning agents, clearing things that don’t work for me, etc.).  People in San Diego can attend his courses at PPNF (call PPNF and ask about David’s schedule for his “Attaining Health in the 21st Century”) and anyone can take his course online anytime, Attaining Optimal Health.  Let PPNF know I referred you, too.  You won’t regret it!

Lastly, I met Esther Gokhale, author of 8 Step to a Pain-Free Back, and took her Gokhale Method Foundations Course.  Extremely informative and she helped me broaden the concepts I learned about the spine which was supported with her research.  She teaches you easy techniques that you can do personally to lengthen the spine (creating space between though discs!), which ultimately can help you get rid of back pain, specifically “StretchSitting” and “StretchLying” on your back and on your sides.  You can do these techniques throughout the day and as long as you want.  She says these techniques are better than an inversion table and cheaper too!  Esther’s book is probably your local library so you can review it before buying it.  Definitely participate in her free online workshops.  I maybe on the call too!  If you are interested in taking her course, but you don’t see it scheduled for your area, send her periodic requests and follow-up on them.  More than likely she will request 8 or more people to be in class – well worth it!

To your health!

News from Michele

happy-healthy-peopleMy website has been updated with a new banner, a simplified menu, and other changes to make it easier to access and read.  More changes and refinements to come so periodically review my website when you can.  Thank you, Laura Rubinstein, my social media consultant, for helping me!

Since November 2013 and on “new moon”, I’ve been doing some body cleanses (also called flushes) that have made me feel so much better.  Highly recommended if you are ready!  Overall, these flushes have changed my taste buds to eating even “more better” with less sugar and more fresh foods.  I’m more energized to do more too.  The main resource I’ve been using is a by Andreas Moritz, The Amazing Liver-Gallbladder Flush.  What I like about his approach is that he has you cleanse your kidneys first, then your digestive track, and finally your liver and gallbladder.  His approach is sane and you use products from your home and grocery store.  My last cleanse I mixed-in two protocols from Sherry Rogers (from her book, Wellness Against All Odds) – I used her liver-gallbladder flush and “The Purge* that aids the removal of metabolic wastes from the body.  All good stuff, but you have to be ready for this type of “bodywork” because it does reset your body-mind-spirit to a new, healthier norm.

* The Purge has several versions of technique, but the original protocol came from Dr. William Donald Kelley in his book, One Answer to Cancer, (and this link is the book!) – another good read.

In January, I gave a presentation to the The Charter 100 of San Diego about Aging Gracefully – Natural Medicine in a Fast Moving World.  I spoke about the massage therapy I do with my clients in assisting them to eliminate pain and restore their natural alignment.  It was a well-attended event and enjoyed the connections I made there, too.

Lastly, I attended the Sedona Yoga Festival in February.  What a great experience being in Sedona and meeting lots of health conscious people!  Thank you Marguerite Baca for inviting me!  It’s amazing how all natural medicine therapies can be blended together to help people without the need for surgeries and the use of drugs, like massage therapy, physical therapy, and yoga.  The best class I took was about pelvic health which included all three of these therapies. The topic was urinary incontinence: 66% of adult women and 33% men have it, but do NOT tell their doctors because it’s embarrassing.  YES, you can get rid of it, but it’s about 1) finding why you have it and 2) then you retrain your bladder (through yoga, breathing, exercises, and/or massage therapy (like structural Integration)) and change your patterns/habits so that you don’t have any leakage.  A great resource for more information about pelvic floor health is by Pelvic Health Solutions.  If you are interested in finding practitioners who specialize in incontinence, contact me by email or phone.

News From Michele

(Click on the blue links and pictures to access websites for more information.)

Welcome to my newly designed e-newsletter.  Yes, definitely a new look.  I hope you like it!

Please, make a note of my new email address which is MicheleRuppert.LMT@gmail.com.

As of this month I am a happy graduate of Sharon Wheeler’s “Integrating Scar Tissue into the Fascial Web” course.  Many of us have scar tissue from accidents and surgeries.  Most of the time we forget about our physical scars, don’t touch them because they feel “funny” or numb, or maybe ignore them because they hurt and have been told there’s nothing you can do about them.  I’m here to tell you that you can get rid of those feelings and thoughts and know that scar tissue can be blended into the surrounding tissue with Scar Tissue Massage.  Most all scar tissue can be worked on with scar tissue massage from new and old scars from accidents and surgeries, radiation, burns, cuts, tears, piercings, etc.  Here’s a testimonial from Chris who was one of our models in this scar tissue course, and his experience when he received this type of massage-bodywork.

Scar Tissue Massage uses touch that is light and casual and rarely feels painful.  During the Scar Tissue Massage, the scar progresses from lumpy, stringy, unevenly textured, and discolored into smooth even pink tissue with relatively little time, effort, or discomfort.  Many times when the work is completed, the whole body will feel more integrated and the trauma associated with the scar is released.  Scar Tissue Massage fits into any of the Structural Integration sessions or it can be a standalone session, too.  For more details visit my website.

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Emotional issues – we all have got them, but you don’t have to be a slave to these phobias, anxieties, and distressing emotions. You CAN great rid of emotional blockages and achieve physical and emotional well being.  The books listed in the references section provide techniques that you can do on your own verses participating the traditional (many times grueling) talk-based therapy.  Personally, sometimes talking about charged issues that make me angry, sad, etc. makes me feel even worse and it doesn’t seem to resolve anything.  Using these techniques seems more calming and appropriate for resolutions and freedom, because the techniques put you in space of how you want to really feel when you are happy and calm and doing the things you love to do.  Here is a video of Dr Pratt showing us the balanced breathing exercise.  Do this exercise for a week, once or twice daily, and see how your life changes.

For folks in San Diego – Both Drs. Lambrou and Pratt are in the neighborhood.  Their offices are in La Jolla.  Why, of course, if I was making the big bucks, I would live there, too!

Cure That Cold by Dr. W. H. Graves, Copyrighted 1954

Quoted from the Forward:

“CURE your cold naturally – without drugs – or suffer with one or several of the following disorders: sinusitis, headaches, visual defects, eye inflammations, tonsillitis, hay fever, asthma, bronchitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, pleurisy, pneumonia, tuberculosis, influenza, gangrene, lung cancer, tumors, chronic skin diseases, heart disorders or the terrible after-effects of head surgery.

The present methods of treating and suppressing colds are fabulously enriching the drug trust (not to mention the doctors).  However, they fail to cure colds and are not only causing serious and baffling diseases but they are also responsible for an alarming increase of deafness and insanity!

Dr. Graves recommends the following for a Simple Cold:

The average cold can be cured in 3 days, though in many cases the time may range from 2-5 days.

1) Withhold all food and drink, except water which should be drunk warm when possible until all symptoms of the cold disappear.

2) You should rest, preferably lying down, during rest periods and lunch hours.  Upon arriving home you should go to bed, unless you feel energetic enough to sit and read.

3) At home you can hasten the elimination of mucus by swabbing your nostrils with eucalyptus oil or by inhaling from a bottle of the oil.

4) Sweat or steam baths are not indicated for simple colds because the mucous membranes are already “sweating” copiously.

5) One or two enemas each day are essential to further help the elimination of toxins and hasten results.”

Dr. Graves has another section for chronic colds, too.

Interesting huh?  Reports show colds/flus are now getting worse, http://www.empowernetwork.com/kingmarkalan/blog/flu-in-america-2013-is-spreading-fast-and-will-get-worse-before-it-gets-better/.  No surprise…

Personally, I would bypass the vaccination, but that’s me…

This 72-page booklet is probably in the attic of your grandparent’s house…

If you have find/have it, read it and give his recommendations a try.  I bet you will feel better!

If you want to learn more about enemas and colonics, Google provides lots of references.

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

For many of us, the holiday season can be stressful.  However, it doesn’t have to be!  You can minimize the stress by taking care of yourself first.  If you don’t take care of you, who will?

Here are some ideas to consider for any holiday so that its more enjoyable and memorable:

Schedule time for you:  Do something fun.  Exercise.  Meditate.  Do something YOU want to do.  Do it daily and enjoy the time you create for yourself.

Make a plan:  Schedule your day of “to do’s” you want to accomplish.  Ask for help.  Have a back-up plan.  If you don’t get it done, there’s always another day.  Maybe even ask yourself “is this task really necessary?”.  Go with the flow and try to make the things you do fun throughout the day.

Listen to your intuition, your body:  We often neglect our intuition (like I shouldn’t buy this, it’s time to go to bed) and our body signals (like hunger, eating too much) because there is “so much” to do, which leads to more stress, exhaustion, and creating bad habits (eating junk food, skipping exercise, staying up too long to get things done, etc.).  Be kind to yourself and hydrate with water, get adequate sleep, eat well, etc.

Focus on memories and not gifts; said another way consume less and share more:  Instead of fretting over holiday shopping, stressing over how much money is being spent, wondering if “they will like it or not”, etc., create a new tradition of creating memories by doing fulfilling, non-food related activities together with your families and friends.  Some ideas are hiking, playing games, and seeing a play are all ideas you could explore together.

Whatever you do, I hope you have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

About What I Do

Do you identify yourself by the discomfort you are feeling lately?

Are you dependent on pain medications or considering splints and other supportive devices (like canes, shoe inserts, etc.), shots (like cortisone, steroids, etc.), and surgery to alleviate pain?

Are you tired of chronic pain, tingling, numbness, always getting injured, experiencing stress fractures, and lack of strength anywhere in your body?

Do you want improved movement, better range of motion, and restful sleep?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, I can help you with the connective tissue massage-bodywork therapies I use during sessions.

My website is very informative, so please visit to learn more about my services, session prices, and my schedule along with massage-bodywork benefits and tips for before, during, and after your sessions.

Here’s a listing of the main articles (with summaries) in this issue of Body Sense:

There is more to massage than just relaxation!  Read about 7 other benefits from being more productive to making you smile!

7 Safety Tips about Autumn Yard Cleanup
Addresses how to prevent pain and injury while working in your yard.

Learning to Ground Yourself
Do think about the connection between you and the earth?  This article shares several strategies to help you get grounded.

Don’t Overlook Kids’ Backpacks
Lists strategies to eliminate pain and discomfort associated with overload backpacks.

And more health information…

I hope you take pleasure in reading Body Sense as much as I do!

Tapping into Ultimate Success: I’m reading this book now (thank you Andy!).  Sounds too simple or maybe even silly, but it is definitely worth reading and trying it.  The book also includes DVD which demonstrates many of the techniques referenced in the book.

September 2012 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Does the below image look and/or feel familiar while using your cell phone and maybe even while working on your computer?  Doing this continually could lead to a forward head posture – NOT attractive and it does NOT feel good.

Here’s a technical article of the forward head posture, http://erikdalton.com/media/published-articles/forward-head-posture/.  If this article doesn’t convince you to change your habits of how you use your electronic devices, I don’t know what will!

head

More ideas to prevent the 42-lb head:

Bring your handheld devices to eye level as noted above.

Correct the ergonomics of your desk/workstation area.  Goggle “proper ergonomics for pc”.  A great video about sitting in a desk chair.

If sitting for long periods of time, schedule an alarm for every hour and walk/exercise for 5-10 minutes.

Drink half your body weight in ounces daily.

Exercise daily with proper nutrition and adequate amounts of rest.

If you already see a forward head posture and your neck and shoulders feel tight, see a massage-bodywork practitioner, like me!

Resources

Finally, more and more research is being done about massage therapy and how it heals!  Below are some articles.  Eventually, I will add reports and articles to my website.

Structural Integration/Rolfing goes mainstream, http://health.usnews.com/health-news/articles/2012/09/05/rolfing-no-longer-a-fringe-therapy.

Many research articles on a variety of ailments, http://www.massagemag.com/Magazine/research.php.
