Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

“The doctor treats, nature heals.” –Aldous Huxley

Most of my life I’ve not needed glasses.  I began noticing my eyesight changing in the past decade.  Then over 2 years ago, I went to the eye doctors to have my eyes checked, and, of course, they prescribed me reading glasses which I did get.  I found when I wore these glasses, my eyesight got worse.  How about you?

After not using the reading glasses, I began doing the Bates Method for about 2 weeks only.  This method includes eye exercises and daily massage of the upper body from finger tips to shoulders along with face and neck.  YES, my eyesight did improve while doing these Bates Method treatments in this short amount of time, but I stopped doing Bates Method because I was too busy to do them.  Now as of today, it seems that my eyesight is slowly deteriorating again.

From my personal experience, I do believe you can improve your eyesight naturally.  Just within the 2 weeks of doing Bates Method techniques, I was able to read in the evenings without strain.  Like with everything else, improving your eyesight requires some personal dedication and work.  The resources below are what I’m reading now to permanently and naturally improve my vision.  I hope it helps you, too.

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

“…medical therapy has been and is a main cause of the epidemic number of people suffering and dying from coronary artery disease (CAD), heart disease, diabetes, heart attacks, stokes, and obesity.” –Dr. Bruce West, Founder of Health Alert

The thick layer of bacteria lining the intestines (gut) is flora.  Once this gut flora is damaged or altered (termed “dysbiosis”), the immune system weakens which allows our bodies to be susceptible all types of health problems and diseases.  Initially people will suffer from indigestion, gut problems, allergies, headaches, menstrual problems, and much more.  Next, people go to the doctor and they are prescribed drugs and/or antibiotics.  The initial problems go away.  Then, later when the discomfort comes back though, typically people repeat the cycle of doctors and drugs until the discomfort goes away again (termed “chronic doctoring”).  The cycle repeats whenever pain is felt, ultimately the gut gets worse and the immune system weakens more.  Lastly, we combine the above conditions with the Standard American Diet (SAD) of processed, sugar-laden foods, it is no wonder that so many people are suffering from serious health conditions like cancer, infections, severe learning disabilities, emotional problems, diabetes, etc.

A solution?  Fix the underlying cause of the problem (which is almost always ignored) – fix the gut!

How can you start feeling better?  Here are some ideas:

  1. Get hydrated with water, minimally half your body weight in ounces, daily.  Occasionally supplement with electrolytes especially if you feel muscle cramps, headaches, etc.
  2. Explore juice fasting with fresh vegetable and fruits.  My March 2012 e-newsletter discusses juice fasting with additional resources.
  3. Eat whole foods like your grandparents used to eat – fresh, unprocessed, and in their natural state.  Minimize eating CRAP – candy, refined food, alcohol, processed foods.

Do one healthy change at a time and make it habit.  Do another healthy change, then another.  Within a year, you should be feeling much better!

“With serious disease, whether it be physical, immune, or emotional,
first, I fix the gut.” –John Parks Trowbridge, MD

Body Sense is a publication written for people who are interested in integrating holistic health into their lives.

I personally enjoy Body Sense, because the articles are short and informative. Instead of “hearing it” from me, you can benefit from other holistic health writers.

Here’s a listing of the main articles (with summaries) in this issue of Body Sense:

Get the Most from Your Massage
5 Keys:  1) Find the right massage therapist; 2) Make requests and set goals; 3) Ask for a prepay package; 4) Find balance during your session; 5) Set your intentions ahead of time.

Addressing “smartphone thumb” and “text neck” syndrome.

The Truth Behind Cracking Your Neck (and Back and Fingers)
Self-manipulation can easily become over-manipulation.  The best advice is when you get the urge to (constantly) crack your neck (back, fingers), it’s your body telling you need a massage.

May 2012 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

You are responsible for you.  Only you can take care of you.
You know yourself better than you.  You can heal yourself.

Everything that happens in life we create.  If you think about it, you know that is true.  Whether good or bad, we create it.  The best part is if we don’t like it, we can change it, too.

Last week I attended a class, Mind over Medal, a Knife-Spoon Bending Workshop.  It advertised that we would learn how to access our creativity and intuition by getting to the 90% of our brain we don’t use.  To me, it was about using our minds to do what we really want to do by setting our desired intention and aligning our body, mind, and spirit to that desire.

We had 4 opportunities to bend our utensils. While using a little more than normal strength to bend the knife or spoon (whatever you had in your hand at the time), we

1) For about a minute we were quiet and set our intention to bend the utensil in our hand, and then commenced yelling at “it” to bend.

2) For about a minute, we reminisced about the most favorite memory, then “commanded it” to bend.

3) Laughed genuinely for about a minute, then “commanded it” to bend while laughing.

4) Listened to “fun” music and danced for about a minute, then commanded “it” to bend while dancing.

fork-spoon

Well, my results were not impressive.  I used 2 different forks in 3 exercise rounds.  The spoon along with laughter was the charm for me – melted like butter.  I got to thinking about this though.  Here were my thoughts relating to the exercises above:

1) Who yells at utensils to bend?  Are you kidding me?

2) I can’t think of a favorite memory right now.  Too many of them to choose from.  Are you kidding me?

3) Finally something that makes sense and is easy.  I love to laugh.  This reminds me Laughter Yoga.

4) She can dance to this song (the first one that played)?!  Who really dances to these songs (the second song)?!  Are you kidding me?

I again realized what I think is who I am, what I can do, be, and more.  Therefore, only you can make “it” happen in your life, whatever it is – not your family, friends, doctors, pets, enemies, etc. – you have to believe in you!  This relates to EVERYTHING in your life!

From a health perspective, Louise Hay said, “If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed.”

Whatever you are working through, there is a body-mind-spirit component to it.  Think about it – it’s slowly (finally) coming to light that drugs and surgeries are not curing people of their illnesses.  So what’s left over:  1) The stuff that people don’t have time for and 2) the stuff people don’t want to deal with.

TheHealthCycle

“Some 70% of premature death and aging is lifestyle-related.  Most modern medicine does not concern itself with lifestyle problems.” –Chris Crowley

Maybe you can cure yourself?  Probably.  Maybe the cure is already available?  I think so.  Where to start?

1) Work on something that bothers you the most.  Or work on something that would bring you the most joy back into your life.

2) Journal about the positive and negative emotions/physical conditions of your body related to this step you are taking.

3) Find someone who will support you all the way in this journey.

4) Find resources that help answer your questions and give you new ideas to explore in your journey, like the references below.

5) Track your progress by taking measurements (weight, body measurements, blood tests, etc.); how do you feel today, a week from now, 2 weeks, etc.

There is so much you can do for you!  You can make a positive difference now!

You are responsible for you.  Only you can take care of you.
You know yourself better than you.  You can heal yourself.

2) Would you listen to my show?
3) What would you be interested in hearing about?
4) Would you like to call in with questions?
5) Would you like to be interviewed?6) What day/time or days/times would you be available to listen?  (All shows will be recorded so you can listen to them later, again and again, download past shows to your music player/computer, etc.).
7) How often would you listen (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly)?
8) How long would you listen (30 minutes, 1 hour)?  (I have up to an hour with no advertisements.  I’m leaning towards weekly or bi-weekly shows.)
9) Other recommendations / thoughts you would like to offer?

Thanks again!  I will keep you posted if this develops into reality.

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Spring is in the air.  Time to lighten up the body, mind, spirit.  Early March, I completed a 10-day juice fast.  Why you ask?  Because I felt I needed to reset my digestive track, my organs, my skin, my taste buds AND to feel better, to have more clarity, to improve my eyesight, to have more energy.

The movie that inspired me to do this 10-day fast (verses 30 or 60 days!) is Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead (watch this documentary now from Hulu).  I enjoyed how he interviewed people from many walks of life.  Also, they have a great website, Join the Reboot, to help you decide what juicer to buy, recipes, and more.

Not for everyone, but sure I do feel better and have continued the juicing at least once to three times daily.  Nothing like getting all those fruit and vegetable micro-nutrients in my body.  I feel energize and also feel like I do “everything else” better.  Mind over matter, maybe, but it is said many times, over and over again, even with Asian healing many centuries ago, that food heals.  It sure feels like it does with me, and you probably wouldn’t hear this type of advice from your primary care doctor!  Just saying…

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Our skin is the largest elimination organ of the body.  It’s known as the third kidney.  When your skin is healthy, it eliminates a quarter of the toxins from your body daily.  When your skin cannot effectively release toxins, you may experience acne, itchiness, rashes/hives, body odor, and maybe eczema and psoriasis.

How to keep the skin fully functional and healthy?  I highly recommend skin brushing, also known as dry brushing.  It works!  The benefits of skin brushing are many:

Removes dead skin cells.
Stimulates lymph and blood flow.
Stimulates the hormone and oil glands.
Reduces cellulite.
Strengthens the immune system.
Simulates the nervous system, tones muscles, and tightens skin.

I’ve experienced all of these benefits with regular, long term skin brushing.  There is a technique to skin brushing to ensure lymphatic flow and waste elimination.  This video has the best technique I’ve seen, AND she is speaking from personal experience, too!

You can Google skin brushing or dry brushing for more information.  Skin brushes can be found at your local store and on the internet.  Remember to skin brush BEFORE you shower.  It’s very invigorating!  While I’m showering, I use bath sponges to help further remove the dead skin cells.  I always feel a bit cleaner than if I used nothing at all or a hand towel.

Give skin brushing a try daily for a month.  You’ll love the way you’ll feel!

December 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

Winter is natural time to pause and reflect.  A time to evaluate what worked and what can be improved in your life.  It is natural to go into “downtime” during the winter and not get as much done as you would normally do throughout the year – we sleep and eat more, are mellower, etc.  Honor it!

Pause and take a deep breath periodically.  Focus on your breathing for awhile.  Get lost in the present.  Decide what is most important now and embrace it.  If you don’t know, here are some ideas to help you:

Find time to meditate/pray/sit quietly in your favorite surroundings.
Volunteer for your favorite organization.
Find meaningful ways to help others.
Connect with family and friends.
Join a support group to help you with challenges in your life.
Explore new healthy ventures – a new exercise or cooking class.
Practice forgiveness, gratefulness, and appreciation.

Enjoy the winter.  Do things you love to do!  It will help you find your balance in order to empower yourself for the New Year!

I am about to complete the Course of Miracles for the first time this year!  What a journey that has been.  I’ve decided I will work on Wayne Dyer’s book, Change Your Thoughts – Change Your Life: Living the Wisdom of the Tao, throughout the year 2012.  Maybe you’ll want to do the same?  Listen to the Wayne’s audio on the above web link.

New Information from Michele

I made several updates to my studio – hopefully you will notice them at your next visit…

In November 2011, one of my clients who finished recently finished a 11-series this year sent me this email testimonial:

I enjoy your newsletters. Two things: Today, I had to go to Balboa Medical Center for an appointment. Six months ago I was so frustrated, because I could not find a handicap parking space, and I was in so much pain – of course I had my cane. Today, I drove right into the parking structure and then walked – did not have to worry about finding a closer handicap parking spot. Walking not without pain but my pain level is now durable. Then, I came home and made my first ride in three years on my bike to the beach. Only three miles round trip, but I have been building up to this by riding my bike around our condo loop. Nice to be able to ride to the beach again and breathe moving air!

Great news, Mel – YOU are doing all the work of getting/being healthy!  I’m glad I could help in your journey to wellness!

About What I Do

Do you identify yourself by the discomfort you are feeling lately?

Are you dependent on pain medications or considering splints and other supportive devices (like canes, shoe inserts, etc.), shots (like cortisone, steroids, etc.), and surgery to alleviate pain?

Are you tired of chronic pain, tingling, numbness, always getting injured, experiencing stress fractures, and lack of strength anywhere in your body?

Do you want improved movement, better range of motion, and restful sleep?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, I can help you with the connective tissue massage-bodywork therapies I use as a part of my practice.

My website is very informative, so please visit to learn more about my services, session prices, and my schedule along with massage-bodywork benefits and tips for before, during, and after your sessions.

I would like to partner with other health practitioners (orthopedic surgeons, dentists, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors, psychological counselors, athletic and life coaches, acupuncturists, movement instructors/practitioners), health facilities (gyms, exercise studios (karate, yoga, dance)), and small businesses in the city of San Diego.  My practice does complement these services to bring about more health and well-being to people.  If you have any recommendations, please connect us by sending them my e-newsletters and contact information, OR I would be happy to contact them directly!

I can provide demonstrations and classes about health and massage-bodywork to businesses and their employees.  Review My Calendar for the talks and health/wellness events I’ve completed in the past in the San Diego community.

If you have any questions about my services and would like to set up an appointment, please, call or email me.  I look forward to working with you at your next appointment!

November 2011 – Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips E-Newsletter

Health-Massage-Bodywork Tips

I attended a Don Tolman “Discovering Self-Care and Self-Education” seminar in October, here in San Diego.  What a passionate, entertaining, down-to-earth gentleman with some fascinating, well-researched, health information.

Don shared with us The 7 Ancient Principles of Heath and how embracing them can help you lead a happy, disease-free life.  Not sure I would call them “ancient”, but I would call them practical, natural, healthy “things you can do” for your health.  You’ve heard them before, and here they are again:

1.    Breathe air that moves – that means get outside to nature and BREATHE!

2.    Drink water – lots of it since you are made up of water…

3.    Receive sunshine – especially “on” your eyes and cranium.

4.    Walk daily – what we humans are designed to do.

5.    Eat whole foods – fruits, vegetables, nuts/seeds.  No dead animal carcasses.

6.    Heal/avoid toxic relationships – toxic relationships are not nurturing.

7.    Passing of ions – live your PASSION!

It is not too late to start on your healthy resolutions!

Happy Thanksgiving!

breathIf you’ve not experienced a Transformational Breathing session, then I would put it on your bucket list!

I experienced several sessions while going through OHI’s 3 week cleansing program.  Not only did I learn how to breathe more deeply (their method), I also experienced a relatively deep level of physical and emotional healing…
